The Department of Continuing Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing sponsors annual Summer Institutes in Qualitative Research. These five-day Institutes are offered in the 3rd week of July, Monday through
Friday.
These Institutes have been held since 1996 and have focused on such topics as differentiating qualitative methods, basic and advanced qualitative analysis, mixed methods research, proposal writing, and writing up qualitative research reports
for publication. The topic for each year is selected by early December and is derived from the results of a market survey – mailed in early October to past and potential participants. Or you may fill out the survey
on-line by following this link. Course syllabi are available on line in advance of each Institute.
Although open to anyone with an interest in conducting qualitative research,
these Institutes are designed for faculty and doctoral students in the practice
disciplines, especially the health professions of nursing, medicine, and public
health. Faculty and students in other practice fields, such as education and
social work, may also benefit from them. No matter what the topic, it is the
practice of qualitative research that is emphasized. During their stay in Chapel
Hill, participants have available to them the rich facilities of the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including the Health Sciences and Davis
Libraries. Participants also have the opportunity to present portions of their
own work, obtain advice from faculty and colleagues, and discuss methods of
resolving problems they may be encountering. Work presented for discussion may
be at any stage of development.
Participation in Institutes is strictly limited so that we can
continue to offer as much personal attention as possible. We, therefore,
encourage early registration. We have always been forced to turn applicants
away. Over the past few years, Institutes have been completely subscribed by
mid-February. Waiting lists are maintained.
